Since winters arrival I’ve heard people over and over again saying “hunt the warm sunny faces”. Now while I’m sure the animals will be there soaking up the sun, it’s bloody hard hunting in the thick tight bush that covers those same faces.

Looking back through my photos and placing animals on the map, most of the deer I’ve shot (mainly Sika) year round have been on southern faces. That may say more about me and my hunting habits than animals and their habits, but the deer are there and hunting those southern sides for several reasons puts the odds slightly back in your favour.

Study your maps, think about where the deer will be and why, pick your spot, plan your hunt keeping the weather forecast and wind direction in mind, get well away from the roads and tracks and shoot some deer this winter.
